Homeowners compare paint brands. Contractors compare prep. If you only take one thing from this article: when a paint job fails early, the paint is almost never the reason.
Paint bonds mechanically and chemically to whatever it touches. If what it touches is dust, chalk, grease, mildew, or a glossy old finish, it bonds to that — and that layer peels away carrying your new paint with it. This is why washing and degreasing come first on every surface, inside and out.
Scraping and sanding are next. Any loose or flaking coating has to come off, and the edges where sound paint meets bare substrate need to be feathered smooth. Skip the feathering and you'll see every one of those edges telegraphing through the finish coat in raking light.
Then comes filling and caulking. Nail holes, dents, and cracks get filled and sanded flush. Gaps at trim, siding joints, and window frames get caulked — not for looks, but because those gaps are exactly where water gets behind the coating and starts the next failure.
Priming is the step most often skipped to save a few hours. Bare wood needs primer. Patched drywall needs primer or the repairs flash through as dull spots. Water stains need a stain-blocking primer or they bleed through two finish coats. Glossy surfaces need a bonding primer. Masonry needs a masonry primer. There's no universal answer, which is exactly why it gets skipped.
